Rated Torque

The maximum continuously transmissible torque of a machine or drive component under rated conditions — the most important selection parameter for motors, gearboxes, and couplings.

Definition

TermMeaningTypical
Rated Torque M_NContinuously transmissibleBase = 1.0 × M_N
Peak TorquePermissible short-term2.0–3.0 × M_N
Breakdown TorqueUnstable limit2.0–3.0 × M_N

Practical Relevance

When sizing a drive unit, the rated torque of the selected component must always cover at least the required load torque plus an operating factor (S_B = 1.5–2.5). This safety factor accounts for startup shocks, load fluctuations, and aging. TEA supports the design and selection of suitable gearboxes.
